Syrena felt her mouth open slightly when they entered the rather large room. She was finding it rather difficult to know where to start their search. “Oh,” she gasped. “This is quite a room.” Soon she found herself wandering towards a nearby table that held a stack of books along with a few rolled up parchments. She picked one up and was about to unscroll it, but then put it back down since it seemed rude to do so without permission.

“Oh, go ahead. You may look what you wish” Louise said as she noticed Syrena’s hesitancy to unscroll one of the rolled parchments. Thaddeus thanked her with a nod and began to look at the unending shelves with thick volumes on them. He could easily spend months looking around in that gigantic library until he could find what he was looking, if he found anything at all. “I will leave you two for a moment, I have some chores to take care of, but feel free to look at what you wish. I shall return in about an hour” Louise said with a gentle smile and then turned around to leave.

“Thank you again,” she called out after she left. With a soft sigh, she proceeded to unroll the parchment that she held. Her eyes briefly skimmed the small handwriting; it was nothing but the history of the abbey and the purpose of it. Syrena picked up another roll and read it. “Remind me again, what exactly we are looking for?”

“That’s always been the problem, love. I don’t know exactly what I’m looking for…” he said, turning to Syrena, and then looking back the huge shelves. He picked a book that seemed to be about history. “Try to find parchments and books about history or legends, those are our best shot. Legends of mermaids turning men immortal, history of men who claimed to have lived more than others… Those are our leads for now” He carried the big book and put it on the wooden table behind where Syrena was. He took a chair and began scanning the pages quickly.

They followed her to the archives, a hint of tension starting to rise, or it was just a feeling inside Syrena. Would they find something there? It was full of history so there was bound to be something, she could tell. It was a bit exciting doing a little research that no one else would know about. Except this was much bigger than that. This was a treasure hunt around the world and this here was only a tiny part of it. They might not find anything at all. But Syrena was determined to remain positive about this.

Louise led them to a very big room, it seemed almost as if it was some sort of huge library the nuns had there. Thaddeus looked around, amazed by the amount of old books and the rolls of parchments he could see in the shelves. He could spend days there and still not finish reading everything that was there. It would take a very long time, and probably Syrena and him would have to return another day to continue their search. He didn’t want to get his hopes up, he had been at this search for years now, seeking in more places a man could travel in one lifetime.

Before the French novice could answer Syrena’s question, Thaddeus had to comment on the place that would seem the right place to find a trinket of some sort. She couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at him since he looked so determined to get their search. She also knew that they shouldn’t raise their hopes. “Yes…it does..can we have look?”

“Of course, I will take you there” Louise smiled and began walking, motioning for them to follow her. “You may read the archives and old books if you wish, but please be very careful with them, some are really ancient parchments”

“Sure, we’ll be extremely careful, miss” Thaddeus answered. There surely was something the nuns valued in that place, too much history in the parchments pages, maybe secrets and legends they could read there. He didn’t know what the abbey held, what mysteries laid there, but he was curious to find out.

“Oh that sounds wonderful!” Syrena looked up at Thaddeus, her grin hinting of the reason they were there. A place like this surely would have something relating to what they were looking for. Hopefully they would find something. Anything. She looked back at her. “Where do we start?”

Thaddeus couldn’t hide his interest as the French novice spoke a room of ancient archives. If there was one place in that abbey that they could find anything remotely related to his curse-breaker, it would be in that room. He wasn’t getting his hopes up anyway, after so many years of useless searching, the pirate didn’t believe this place would be any different. “That room of archives sounds interesting” he said.

Syrena clasped her hands together, smiling. “If you do you not mind giving us a quick walkthrough of the abbey, then that would be lovely. And then perhaps we will just walk on our own. Are you sure it’s alright for us to do that?”

“I would love to. I can take you the prettiest sights the abbey has, to the chapel, show you the room of ancient archives… There’s just plenty of interesting things to see here” Louise smiled at the couple. “Strictly speaking, we are not allowed to do this, but the Sister Superior knows what an interesting place filled with history the abbey is, so she secretly lets us show the place around to some foreigners”

Syrena merely nodded in response to her comment about her father. The subject itself was something she rarely spoke of, and was hoping to keep it that way. Unless she felt that need to speak of it. Now she had run out of questions to ask, but she did answer. “It is quite beautiful..” Yes, it was a better sight than her old home, but it made her think of her poor mother, still working in that bloody tavern. She had to put that thought aside; it was best to forget as much as possible. The next few minutes were quiet as the continued on. Hopefully they’d get to the abbey soon; Syrena was much more excited to see the building itself.

Thaddeus remained silent as Syrena and the French novice spoke. His arm was still around her waist and as they walked in silence, he brought her a little closer to him. “Look, there’s your castle, my love” he whispered in her ear and pointed forward with his free hand. There, in the horizon, they could manage to see a building on a hill. There was still some way to go walking, but at least the abbey was in sight now.

It was silly how Syrena could’ve forgotten quickly at how Thaddeus’ voice sent a small shiver down her spine when he whispered in her ear. But she followed the direction in which he was pointing at, and there she saw the abbey. A small smile grew on her lips as she gazed upon the old castle-like building. “It’s beautiful,” she commented. She was about to quicken her pace but decided against it since everyone else was at their own pace. She would have to be patient with the walking.

He couldn’t help but smile a bit because clearly Syrena was so excited about the abbey. She was like a little girl wanting to run to get there faster, but she stayed next to him, walking at a normal speed.

“Is there anything in particular you wish to see of the abbey?” the French girl asked as they stood only a few meters away from the main entrance. “If not, I could guide you myself. If you wish, of course, if not you could walk around on your own”

“Je suis très désolé pour ton père. (I’m very sorry about your father)” said Syrena. “Si cela peut aider, je n’ai jamais rencontré mon père. (If it helps, I never met my father.) But, I’m sure it wouldn’t in your situation. Do you enjoy living here though?” After that, she glanced around, noticing all the trees and pure greenness of the land. Overall it looked to be a very nice place to live, but perhaps there could have been some disadvantages to it.

Louise noticed the looks on the faces of the Scottish novices as well as the man accompanying Syrena, clearly they couldn’t understand the small exchange of words she had in French with the other girl “Oh, I’m so sorry, that was rude. We merely talked of my father” she turned to the other novices, and they nodded. They knew her story as well, not in full detail, but they had the overall knowledge of what had happened. “I am sorry about your father, though, about the fact that you never met him…” They had been walking for a while now and Louise knew they would reach their destination soon. “Yes, Aberdeen is a very lovely place. It feels like home already”

Her heart slightly sank at the fact that there wasn’t a castle. Syrena thought there would be after all she heard while in the tavern. Unless she mixed Scotland with England since she’s never been there before. However her hopes were raised when he informed her of an abbey that would be close enough as castle. “Oh yes I would love to!” she smiled, her eyes bright and filled with excitement. “I must’ve gotten confused that there were castles here. Are they in England?”

“Well, to the abbey it is” he smiled and gave her a quick kiss, happy that she seemed joyous again even though there were no castles. The abbey would be close enough to one, he had been there about… eighty years, ninety years ago perhaps. He didn’t remember every detail of it, he had only seen it from afar actually but he remembered it was quite a big and beautiful building. “Maybe there are castles around here, but I honestly don’t know, love” They walked a bit more “We have to find someone who can take us to the abbey” Nearby were three young women dressed in novice’s attires, surely they would know how to get to the abbey. “Excuse me, ladies. Do you know how to get to the abbey?”

Syrena smiled at the three ladies when they approached them which they did so in return. However, one of them beamed at Thaddeus as she answered, “Why o’ course we do. Not far from ‘ere, but we’d gladly take ye there ourselves. That is, if ye don’t mind.” The other two nodded in agreement while Syrena looked up at Thaddeus to see what he would said. She also held on tighter to him as an act of precaution. Although she had to admit that she did adore the girl’s Scottish accent and she’d might even try it herself.

“Why, thank you. That’s very kind of you” Thaddeus smiled at the three women. He then turned to Syrena, grinning. “You’ll get to see your castle after all, love” he whispered to her ear.

Louise smiled at the couple. Clearly they were both foreigners, the man had a thick accent, but it didn’t sound like the ones she was so used to hear in Scotland. “What brings you to Aberdeen?” she asked, the clear French accent in her voice. “I do not mean to be rude, I am simply curious” she added, smiling.
